What is Lucknow's Bada Mangal? | The Untold Story of This Tradition Associated with Hanuman ji
Hanuman ji, as we know, is deeply linked to Shiva ji. In northern India, Tuesdays and Saturdays are considered especially auspicious for his fast and puja. But do you know that there is a very special Tuesday called Bada Mangal or Budhwa Mangal? And why is a grand community feast (Bhandara) held on this day?

It is said that when the son of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, fell seriously ill, his Begum (wife) prayed to Hanuman ji. When the son recovered, she had a Hanuman temple built in Aliganj — and it was from here that the beautiful tradition of the Bhandara (community feast) began.
"It was on this very day that Hanuman ji met Ram ji. That is why this day is called 'Bada Mangal' — The Great Tuesday."
It is also said that when Bhima ji grew arrogant about his own strength, Hanuman ji appeared in the form of an old man and humbled his ego — and that is why this day is also lovingly called Budhwa Mangal (The Old Man's Tuesday).
🗓️ When is Bada Mangal Celebrated?
Bada Mangal is celebrated on every Tuesday of the Hindu month of Jyeshtha (Jeth) — one of the hottest and driest months in the Indian Vikram Samvat calendar. Normally there are four or five Tuesdays in Jyeshtha, but this year 2026 is truly special!
This year we have an Adhik Maas (Purushottam Maas) — an extra leap month in the Vikram Samvat calendar — and the month of Jyeshtha is being repeated. This means we get to celebrate a remarkable eight Bada Mangals this year! 🎉
📅 What is Adhik Maas?
The Vikram Samvat calendar follows a precise astronomical calculation to keep the lunar and solar cycles in alignment. When a gap builds up between the two, an extra month — called Adhik Maas or Purushottam Maas — is added. This occurs once every 3 to 4 years.
The month that gets repeated is not random — there is a careful celestial calculation behind this decision, ensuring that the seasonal and weather cycles remain properly adjusted.
This year, since Jyeshtha is repeated, we can expect an extended hot and dry period. Interestingly, the last time many of us remember an Adhik Maas, it was the month of Shravan that was repeated — and sure enough, we witnessed an extended and abundant monsoon season that year!
There is also a rare and fascinating opposite phenomenon in the Vikram Samvat — occasionally, a month does not appear on the calendar at all. This is an extremely rare occurrence, and a wonderful reminder of just how sophisticated and nuanced this ancient Indian calendar system truly is.

On each Bada Mangal, community feasts are organised at countless locations across Lucknow, where people joyfully distribute chickpeas, puris, sherbet, halwa, and more. Forgetting all distinctions of caste and religion, it is purely a day of devotion and service to humanity.

लखनऊ का बड़ा मंगल क्या है? | हनुमान जी से जुड़ी इस परंपरा की अनसुनी कहानी
हनुमान जी, जैसा कि हम जानते हैं, महादेव के अवतार हैं। उत्तर भारत में मंगलवार और शनिवार उनके व्रत और पूजा के लिए विशेष रूप से शुभ माने जाते हैं। लेकिन क्या आप जानते हैं कि एक बहुत ही खास मंगलवार होता है जिसे बड़ा मंगल या बुढ़वा मंगल कहा जाता है? और इस दिन भव्य भंडारा क्यों आयोजित किया जाता है?
आइए जानते हैं...
कहते हैं कि जब उत्तर प्रदेश के लखनऊ के नवाब वाजिद अली शाह के बेटे की तबीयत गंभीर रूप से बिगड़ी, तो उनकी बेगम ने हनुमान जी से प्रार्थना की। जब बेटा ठीक हो गया, तो उन्होंने अलीगंज में एक हनुमान मंदिर बनवाया — और यहीं से भंडारे की यह सुंदर परंपरा शुरू हुई।
"इसी दिन श्री हनुमान जी का प्रभु श्रीराम से मिलन हुआ था। इसीलिए इस दिन को 'बड़ा मंगल' कहा जाता है।"
यह भी कहा जाता है कि जब भीम को अपने बल पर घमंड हो गया, तो हनुमान जी एक वृद्ध रूप में प्रकट हुए और उनका अहंकार चूर किया — और इसीलिए इस दिन को प्यार से बुढ़वा मंगल भी कहा जाता है।
🗓️ बड़ा मंगल कब मनाया जाता है?
बड़ा मंगल हिंदू माह ज्येष्ठ (जेठ) के हर मंगलवार को मनाया जाता है — जो विक्रम संवत कैलेंडर के सबसे गर्म और शुष्क महीनों में से एक है। सामान्यतः ज्येष्ठ में चार या पाँच मंगलवार होते हैं, लेकिन इस वर्ष 2026 वाकई बेहद खास है!
इस वर्ष विक्रम संवत कैलेंडर में अधिक मास (पुरुषोत्तम मास) आया है — और ज्येष्ठ का महीना दोहराया जा रहा है। इसका अर्थ है कि इस वर्ष हम कुल आठ बड़े मंगल मना सकेंगे! 🎉
📅 अधिक मास क्या होता है?
विक्रम संवत कैलेंडर एक सटीक खगोलीय गणना पर आधारित है, जो चंद्र और सौर चक्रों को संतुलित रखती है। जब इन दोनों के बीच अंतर बढ़ जाता है, तो एक अतिरिक्त महीना जोड़ा जाता है — जिसे अधिक मास या पुरुषोत्तम मास कहते हैं। यह हर 3 से 4 वर्षों में एक बार आता है।
कौन सा महीना दोहराया जाएगा, यह कोई संयोग नहीं — इसके पीछे एक गहरी खगोलीय गणना होती है, जो ऋतु और मौसम चक्र को सही बनाए रखती है।
इस वर्ष ज्येष्ठ का महीना दोहराया जा रहा है, इसलिए हम एक लंबी गर्म और शुष्क अवधि की अपेक्षा कर सकते हैं। रोचक बात यह है कि पिछली बार जब श्रावण का अधिक मास आया था, तो उस वर्ष मानसून भी लंबा और भरपूर रहा था!
विक्रम संवत में एक और दुर्लभ और अद्भुत घटना भी होती है — कभी-कभी कोई महीना कैलेंडर से बिल्कुल गायब हो जाता है। यह अत्यंत विरल घटना है और यह इस प्राचीन भारतीय कैलेंडर प्रणाली की गहराई और परिष्कार का प्रमाण है।

प्रत्येक बड़े मंगल पर लखनऊ भर में अनगिनत स्थानों पर भंडारे आयोजित होते हैं, जहाँ लोग हर्षोल्लास के साथ चना, पूरी, शरबत, हलवा आदि बाँटते हैं। जाति और धर्म के सभी भेदों को भूलकर, यह दिन केवल भक्ति और मानव सेवा का होता है।
